Best Of Buddies : FLANAGAN & ALLEN : 2CD

First recorded in 1931 - Bud's own composition 'Underneath The Arches', remains their most famous hit. This collection of 50 recordings spans 17 years, from 1935 to 1952. Bud's trademark was to appear dressed in a moth-eaten fur coat and battered straw hat, whilst Ches was the 'smart' one. Together, they would amble across the stage, swaying gently from side to side, in time to the music. Bud led, and Ches followed, with his hand placed on Bud's shoulder. In more recent years, others have paid tributes by 'doing a Flanagan and Allen', notably Roy Hudd and Christopher Timothy, and Bernie Winters and Leslie Crowther.

Blues From The Roundhouse : ALEXIS KORNER & CYRIL DAVIS : CD

'The Godfather' and 'The Architect' of British Blues, respectively, Alexis Korner and Cyril Davies had each played in various Jazz and Skiffle combos before linking up in 1956, ostensibly to present live music at The Roundhouse pub in London's Soho. Although initially allied to Skiffle, both Cyril and Alexis were considerably more interested in The Blues, as these early recordings testify. The first recorded fruits of their liaison was the unfeasibly-rare 10 inch LP Blues From The Roundhouse, credited to Alexis Korner's Breakdown Group featuring Cyril Davies, recorded in February 1957. This album is the Holy Grail among collectors, as only 99 copies were ever pressed and it has never previously been reissued (NB: it's listed in the Record Collector Price Guide at £1,000+). It was swiftly followed by two equally-rare EPs, each also confusingly titled Blues From The Roundhouse, credited to The Alexis Korner Skiffle Group and Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated featuring Cyril Davies, respectively. These three pivotal releases, plus an LP outtake, make up the backbone (tracks 1-17) of this unique compilation. Only three of these sides have ever previously appeared on CD, making this a genuinely crucial collectors' release. The twelve bonus tracks were all recorded between 1954-56 and feature Alexis and/or Cyril as sidemen.

Swinging Country Rhythm - Bonnie Lou's recorded output in the 1950s occupied that small niche of early country rockers that eschewed the backwoods hillbilly boogie style and, instead, created something more unique. Featuring a swinging country rhythm overlaid with horn solos and King's trademark handclap boosted offbeat, Bonnie's sound was often closer to Bill Haley than that of the other mid-west rockabillies. Up until now, Bonnie Lou's classic King and Fraternity tracks from the 1950s have not been well-served by the reissue labels. During Matt Monro's remarkable career he made nearly seven hundred television and radio appearances ranging from standard variety fare, talk shows, game shows, duet routines, comedy skits, commercial jingles to programmes he hosted himself. Sadly little of this material exists today with only a handful of appearances stored in dusty archives. This double disc set features an audio CD the bulk of which was recorded as a transcription tape in 1961 featuring the Ted Heath Orchestra. This tape was never broadcast in the UK and so this release see's these recordings coming to light for the very first time in this country. The second part of this set is a DVD of some of Matt's finest BBC television performances. Firstly the inclusion of Matt's own television show Matt Sings Monro, a thirty-minute 1974 special, highlighting many of Matt's classics including the massive hits Born Free, Portrait of My Love and Walk Away. Saturday Night at the Mill gives us nearly twenty minutes of Matt at his best and as well as a plethora of song it allows us access to an in-depth interview showcasing Matt's warm gentle manner and keen sense of humour highlighting what made him such a popular return guest across all media formats. The inclusion of an extract from the Cilla Black Show in 1972 gives us a rare opportunity of seeing Matt perform Curiouser and Curiouser from the film Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Another guest on the show, Leslie Crowther, joins together with Cilla and Matt to entertain us with a rendition of the specially written skit Crowther, Monro and Black. Rounding off this fantastic collection is an appearance from a 1971 Morecambe and Wise Show, which includes the track Thanks.

The Banjo's Back In Town : BIG BEN BANJO BAND : 2CD

This selection features recordings made by The Big Ben Banjo Band during the height of their popularity, from 1955 to 1958. They were formed towards the end of 1954 by Columbia A & R man Norrie Paramor and were purely intended as a recording unit. Basically they were a Dixieland-style outfit with banjos predominant. Norrie had the pick of the top session musicians, and his original line up included George Chisholm on trombone, Tommy McQuater (trumpet) and Bert Weedon (guitar). They continued to record prolifically, right through into the 1970s.
